Air Con belt slashed to change fan belts 200 1979

While changing my fan belts yesterday, I spent a very frustrating hour trying to work out how to loosen the air con compressor belt to remove it so I could get the fan belts on.
I wound up cutting the bloody thing off (thankfully, it's winter here in Australia) to get access, safe in the knowledge someone on this site will know how to do it before summer gets here!
How the hell do you loosen the tension of the A/C belt? For the life of me I can't see a bolt similar to that which adjusts the alternator.

The reason I was changing the belts was my amp light intermittently comes on, and the battery when the engine is running only puts out 11.5 volts. The belts were in very bad shape but it hasn't fixed the problem. A friend suggested I start the car and then disconnect the battery, if it stalls the alternator is not working properly. Any truth in this? I've checked fuses. Could it be the battery? Any ideas anyone

Cheers
