Hello All,
I have a 1988 740GLE sedan w/120K miles. AW70L Transmission.. I am getting a consistent, quickly-repetitive "thumping" noise upon any acceleration or sustained cruise. The noise generally stops when Throttle is eliminated. Also, the car has an almost "shimmy"-type vibration upon takeoff (within the first 5-10mph of acceleration)...It appears that this noise is coming from the center area of the car. (You can feel every "thump" being transmitted through the arm rest, for example).. I had my car in a shop a few weeks back for AC service and they pointed out the the Driveshaft Center Support is worn out and has too much "slop".. I am in agreement with this diagnosis.. (I suspect my worn motor mounts contributed the situation by probably letting the engine sit too low- possibly changing the angle of the driveshaft enough to wear the Support..?)..
My question is.. What are your opinions on the *choices* of Center Support/Bearing solutions out there? One Brickboard poster appeared not happy with a Scantech Bearing & Bushing... Will they work?? Would you suggest using a SKF bearing in a New Scantech housing/support..Or would you recommend getting Genuine Volvo part(s) from the dealer?? I just want a high quality combination that will eliminate this problem, without draining my wallet.. (the price on the Scantech Center Support is pretty attractive in this view).. Your personal opinions, are QUITE welcome on this! :) Thanks much,
PS- I am also considering replacing my U-joints at the same time, as i imagine it would be easy tackle while the driveshaft is out...and would undoubtedly do the car good... Any Brand suggestions on those??
Again.. Thanks!
