Looking for a 900 900

My wife and I are looking into a 940 wagon to update from our 740. We are looking for a Turbo model with a year date between 94-96, I see alot of 940S models here in Australia and I must say I would have clue what the S stands for. Is it a 8 valve or a 16 valve, or did the turbo's only come in 8 valve only (which my trusted volvo mechanic says to stick to).
Cut a long story short what should I be looking at in regards to known issues with this model, and is any particular year model better that the other.

Everyones trusted advice is much appreciated....
