Highbeams kills car 700 1987

My daughter's car said that her car would kill when she turned on the high beams on the car. She would have to put car in N/P to start it and it would run fine on the low beams.....I have not checked it out yet but does anyone have an idea what it could be....it would give me a starting point. Thanks for any inputs....VolvoLarry
