Hi guys,
I have received varying opinions regarding whether it is necessary to replace the door speaker wire in an 82 242 that I am installing a new head unit in. The head unit will probably be an Alpine, with Boston Acoustic speakers intended for the doors (4" in original spot) and rear deck (6x9" with new wiring).
The question is whether to replace the old wiring (my guess is that it is a max of 18 guage and may well be 20 or 22 guage) with something like good quality 16 guage copper. Does someone have an informed opinion on this point?
If you think that the wiring should be replaced do you have suggestions about how best to route the new speaker wire from the head unit through the chasis walls into the doors?
Someone suggested using the old wire to pull the new wire through the stock sheathing, but it appears too tightly bundled with other wire for this to work. I've checked a number of books and don't see this kind of topic covered, although it seems relatively crucial to doing a good job.
Tips and suggestions? Thanks.
Regards, Dave
