93 240 wagon behaving badly!

Hello-
I love my 1993 240 wagon and want to nurse it through its latest bout of bad performance and I am hoping y'all can help... Here's what it's doing:
It turns over well, but takes 3-5 full seconds of turning to actually start.
Once running, it idles roughly for a bit, then a bit better as it warms, until I put it in gear and put my foot on the gas... then it runs rough again.
I put it in gear, and it often cuts out immediately. If I just put my foot on the brake, it does NOT cut out.
I begin to drive after a restart or two, and the car begins to drive, but still roughly.
The first time or two that I stop, the car acts like it wants to cut out again, and as I continue to drive, the car occasionally feels like it's missing, sputtering, and intermittantly losing power.
I cannot hear or see vacuum leaks.... I smell no fuel smells, though I did smell fuel a while ago (I think that was just a loose gas cap)
I have a "check engine" light- if I disconnect the battery and then reconnect it, the engine runs rougher still, and the light comes back on a day or two later.
