Will my new amp kill my alternator 200 1988

I just bought a new sony amp and hooking it up seems a bit scary as the wiring to the amp has to be 4 gauge. It says it can draw 40-60 amps. How will I know if it is going to kill my alternator. Can I tell if it is drawing more power than the system can provide? Can I hook up an auxiliary alternator?
