740 Wagon tail light problem - Diagnosis? 700 1991

Howdy, this is probably a relatively simple problem, but one that I haven't encountered before.

The following happens when I apply the brakes:

bulb warning light on instrument cluster comes on
both brake (and upper) lights come on, but right tail light goes OFF

both tail lights work normally when brake is not applied.
all other lighting works normally.

I have a feeling this is not very unusual...anyone know where the problem is??
