AC clutch / compressor squealing 700 1989

Hello all,

Great info here on the board, but I'm having a problem I can't seem to find an answer to. 2 days ago on a short trip (1.5hrs one way) I was using the AC fine. Then on the trip back, the AC wouldn't work. The AC light would just flash constantly. I looked up on the board here what the problem was. My blower fan wasn't spinning. Turned out to be a blown fuse! Well a new fuse fixed the climate control unit's problem, but now the compressor won't engage. I noticed before the trip that it (the compressor) had been gradually making more & louder squealing, as it does yet to this day. The squealing subsides after several minutes of the engine running (w/out the AC on), but is still quite noticeable. I sprayed some WD40 on the front of the clutch (careful not to get the belt), but didn't help much.

From what I'm reading here on the BB, I think the clutch is bad, but I'm not sure. Maybe it's the relay? I looked behind the glove box (removed it) and couldn't see any relays (except for the relay panel by the passenger L footwell).

Note: this car has been retrofitted w/R134a, but the compressor is from old R12 (it says R12 on it).

Any input is greatly appreciated.
TIA,
Seth
