brake failure light 200 1984

what situations can causes the brake failure light to illuminate?
is it a pressure differential switch?

my light has recently come and i was trying to diagnose what part(s) to replace

i havent lost any fluid but i have lost a good deal of pedal
the light does not stay constanly on, only when i depress the pedal
when i let off the pedal the light sometimes goes off but not always, it can be turned off if I tap the pedal

i have a slight pull to the left under heavy breaking

my own idea is that it is one of the seals in the master cylinder

any advice would be appreciated

one other thing, if i pump the pedal multiple times and hold the pedal sometimes the light does not come on

does volvo use a dual diagnol set up on their brake lines?

thanks for all of your guys help!
