Idle motor / valve 900

I'm a little confused on exactly what the idle motor is, and its location. Can someone give me an education on this device (is it actually a motor, where is it located, its function, etc). thanks

One thing that has thrown me off is, I thought that small silver "can" (guess its really some sort of valve) with the few hoses going into it was the motor.
