While driving home last night on the highway overdrive kicked off and a few seconds later the power wire from the relay to the o-drive solenoid melted in a cloud of smoke and sparks from the relay through the firewall and down the tranny tunnel. Very exciting at 75mph!
from what I can tell visually nothing crossed the wire to short it, did the relay just die and cause all this? or do I need a more thorough inspection of the solenoid and o-drive unit?
thanks,
-erik
p.s. after the panic stop and evacuation and realization that the fire extingusher was not needed, I just pulled the power wire from the super hot relay, checked to ensure no wires got fried in the meltdown, and drove the ol girl the last 80 miles home with no problems but a headache from driving with no o-drive.
