hot stall 700 1990

My dad, a devoted brick owner at 81 yrs old, blew a heater hose on his 90 740 last Monday. He noticed his temp gauge just going into the red and pulled off and shut it down. He carries water so he refilled it a couple time between there and home. He got a hose and replaced it the next day. He drove the car Wed to the market and when he came out and tried to start it, no go. Cranks fine but no start. Had it towed. It was several hours before they got to it and, of course, it started and ran fine. He picked it up the next day, drove all over and no problem. He and mom went out Fri. afternoon and right on a main bridge in rush hour traffic it stalled and wouldn't restart. Had to have it towed again and the shop was closed for the weekend by the time they got there so they just off loaded it. He went back Sat. AM and, true to form, it started right up. Did the overheating episode cook something on the block? His FP relay is almost new and the RSR is also. He switched them just to check when it wouldn't start with no success. He replaced his rpm sensor last fall and the connection looks fine. Coil pac is two years old. No codes. Have been thru the no hot start section in the FAQ but am missing something. Any ideas appreciated.
