My son bought an 81 244 for a parts car. The previous owner said the car made a lot of grinding noises, then ground to a halt and would not move. He didn't say for how long the noises had been happening. We discovered that the left rear wheel was frozen up. The axle had move outward about three sixteenths of an inch and pushed the rotor out with it. I guess things got hot and the outer brake pad had stopped the wheel from turning. Obviously, the PO should have attended to the wheel bearing when it first started making noise.
Question: Is the press fit of the wheel bearing to the axle the only thing that actually prevents the axle from falling out of the differential? This axle has definitely moved outward and no bolts are loose, and the bearing retainer plate is tight.
