760 GLE main fuel pump replacement 700 1984

Hi

My 760 GLE 1984 (V6, gas) seems to need a new main fuel pump. My question is: Will only a main fuel pump from a 760 GLE 1984 do? Is the part similar enough on the other 700 series models? This could make a donor car a lot easier to find at the wreckers. I'm currently in Portland OR.

If more details would help, here they are: The engine was refusing to start; a garage mechanic dismantled the pump and told me it was worn out. I believe the mechanic as when the car doesn't start, hitting the pump with a metal object makes it audibly spin up and the engine then starts and runs fine. Quotes for the replacement are in the $500 ballpark as I am told a new part is very expensive.

When the main pump spins up it tends to keep running, and I believe from looking at the FAQs that this means the pre-pump could be dead. There is a lack of power and jerkiness in hard acceleration with low levels of fuel in the tank. If the pre is dead then we can probably live with keeping the tank full as the acceleration is fine then.

I'm using the car solely for the purpose of a road trip lasting another couple of months so I'd like to avoid paying the garage price. Equally I'd like to avoid it breaking down totally far from help. But used parts seem difficult to come by at the wreckers.

Thanks if you can help.

Stephen
