The elusive front end clunk continues to, well, elude me. I had the bright idea that it might be the steering u-joints, so I liberally greased them with spray-on lithium grease, and the clunk seemed to stop for a day or so. But then it started up again. When I first got my 1991 754 turbo, my indy mechanic replaced the lower steering u-joint, but I wondered if my problem might be the upper one. I get a small catch in the steering when bearing left or right onto a highway (from an entrance ramp) and wondered if this might be connected to the clunk problem.
The clunk always is related to steering - when I steer into my driveway, it clunks, and the "unclunks" when I straighten out the car and stop it. I can get it to repeat the clunk and "unclunk" by turning the steering wheel sharply to the left and going back and forth slowly in the drive way. The clunk has a slightly metallic ring to it.
I have new strut rod bushings, inner tie rods, lower ball joints, control arm stays and bushings...what else could it be? The wheels have no play in them, and so the bearings are probably all right.
Thanks.
