Trim Question 200

The trim above the bumper on the I think '86, 87... comes in three pieces. Anyone try putting on a pre 86 trim that is all black as a replacement.... or can it be done? just wondering. Also what is the purpose of the little plastic piece that runs along below the door on the car. just looks? protects the side?
