Flash! Local salvage yard owner finds fortune in an '89 245 200 1989

I was out on the side of Louisville with all the salvage yards yesterday, and I noticed a yard with what looked to be a relatively nice 245 on a flatbed. Well, I'm always on the lookout for good parts, and I thought, hummm, this is a car that hasn't been picked over yet. I pulled over, went inside, and asked the guy how much he would take for the hubcaps on the Volvo wagon on the flatbed (as far as I'm concerned, plastic hubcaps shouldn't be more than 5 or 6 bucks each, and I felt that the man's answer might indicate just how fair his prices were).

The owner replied that he had just gotten the car in and that it didn't have an engine (said nothing about hubcaps). He then asked me if wanted to buy the entire car. I asked what year it was and how much he wanted. He said he thought it was a '92, that the price was $500, and if I wanted to, I could go back into the yard to have a look.

I hopped up onto the flatbed, and checked the mfg. sticker - a 1989 (in fairness to the guy, it DID have 1992 plastic hubcaps). The car was a DL, but it had the nastiest interior I've ever seen on a 240. Dirt/mud were ground into the carpet, the seats were ripped and crooked, and just about every plastic trim piece was broken or missing. There was no third seat. Everything was permeated by tobacco stench. The exterior wasn't much better. The roof and hood paint wasn't just faded, it looked like it had spent its life parked in the sun in a parking lot somewhere south of he&&. The floorpan had several rust holes. The moulding was warped and faded. And yes, the motor was missing, along with the tranny. The odometer read 287k miles.

The hubcaps, however, were almost pristine. I went back in and told the owner that I wasn't interested in his car for $500, but was still interested in the hubcaps. He said that he "didn't want to part the car out." I thanked him for his time and went on my way.

So, if anybody out there in brickland is looking for a rolling 245 chassis, come on down to River City. I know a gut who'll fix you right up!
