Question about SU carbs, volvo 144s b20b 140-160

Ok, this is how the "story of the carbs" goes.

i bought the car, made it run. had to put origional carbs on spare manifold that came with car; replacing weber carb conversion. cleaned carbs from kits during this process. rear carb leaked. remained that way until recently, when i did this:

i took off the float chamber plate off of bottom of carb, placed on flat surface, saw that it was warped. put in a press, flattened it out. cleaned, and put back in car. doesn't leak anymore. but, doesn't adjust right anymore. can't turn screw full two and one half turns for standard adjustment. after various methods, i finally take out the little peice that is controlled by the adjustment screw and put it in a vice and tap it with a hammer so that it bends a little towards where the adjustment screw would rest. put back in. it now adjusts correctly. however, NOW, it won't idle with the choke in. this is my problem. i had this problem before, when i had two cracked exhaust valves, but had the head cleaned up and those replaced and everything put back how it's supposed to go. but what could it be now? my dad said that it could be the valve that the carburator opens or closes i'm not sure for idling. i don't know if the not idling and "fixing" the carburator are related. I have two spare SU carburators that are a little different, but i could clean them up and try and see if they would work, if these ones are beyond help, but who knows...

any input would be apreciated.

thanks,
