'88 gauge cluster problem 200 1988

I might be doing something wrong, but...The odometer went out on my '88 240DL (manual) at about 266K. Prior to that the coolant temp gauge had been working sporadically, and eventually not at all. I decided to "try to" fix these problems after a quick trip downtown resulted in both motor mounts failing and tearing the upper radiator hose (along with the tank extension) off the radiator. Of course without a temp gauge, I didn't know I was overheating until I got off the highway. I fortunately only went about 3 miles at that speed. Quick thinker that I am, the steam coming from under the hood tipped me off. I purchased a "new" cluster off of ebay, installed it, and still have the same problems. I realize that the temp sending unit may be bad, but I'm more concerned with the odometer not working. Is there someting I may be missing?

Also, is there a site I can go to that will detail/show how to correctly rebuild the AC system on this car? Has anyone heard of a new freon relacement called 12a or something similar to that? Thanks very much for any help you can extend my way on this.
