'84 242D wont start on first try 200 1984

Hi all,
I've got what seems like an odd problem... my 1984 242D won't start on the first crank. I can crank it for quite a while the first try and the engine just wont start. If I release the key and crank a second time the engine starts up fine. Any ideas on why this might be happening?
