MAF Interchangeablility 200 1985

I replaced a dead maf on the 85 with one from an 83 and everything was fine until I was told it couldn't be done ("won't last long"). I bought a re-furb from my local Discount Auto and it did't work at all. Returned same for another one and it worked for a few miles. What gives?
Is the 83 OK in an 85?
Would an 86 work in an 85?
