Check engine light, not working 200 1987

I have had my 1987 240 GL for two years now, from 92,000 miles to 113,000 miles. The engine light has yet to come on. I believe it should come on every 7500 miles or so. Should this be a concern? I know that the light can be a nuisance but how would I test it to ensure it will come on if something serious happens?
