Replacing fuel pump hose? 140-160 1972

I had a nasty scare recently when I heard a squealing sound coming from the fuel pump area. Upon inspection saw that the small hose coming out of the fuel pump had a tear and was spurting gasoline...I replaced the hose but have run into a more serious problem, and am wondering if I made things worse with the hose replacement. The car is now losing power while driving; it will start up fine but then while driving begins surging and chugging (definitely sounds like a fuel problem) before cutting off. I am wondering if this is caused by the new hose I used, which was a smaller diameter than the torn hose. Or perhaps the fuel pump is just dying? Any thoughts on what might be causing this?
