Guide Pin Installation Question on 700/900 Caliper Bridges

The guide pins are not perfectly round. Must they be installed a certain way? In other words, do they go in only one way or do they go in either way and then have to be turned and locked down with the bolt?

Do the bridges simply wear out over time? Do the guide pins simply wear out over time?
