growling fixed, now PS trouble 900 1995

The growling was the power steering pump. Replaced the pump with one I thought was good. Now no P/S! Neither my father nor I has ever had to change a P/S pump before (5 drivers in family, Volvos constantly for the last 40 years), and well, it was easy. What I'm wondering is if there's any sort of trick? Do I need to bleed the system somehow? Is there anything I need to check or do before I scrap the used pump and just buy a new one? Thanks in advance-
