i have a 91 740 and about a month ago it stalled out on me in the rain. here is a history of the problem: the dmv is doing road construction on my road an i had to stop at a flag man. rainy day. the car is doing fine while idling i dont recall it missing but when i take my foot off the brake and try to accellerate (auto tranny) it sputters and stalls out. i try to recrank it but it wont, i try for about 5 mins and it does crank but when you take it out of park it does the sputter, cough, miss, thing and dies. i try again and get it going in about 5 more minutes, but this time it goes normally and i back it into a nursing home parking lot incase it dies again and call my mechanic. he say bring it in and well look at it. on my to him (maybe a mile and a half) it only misses once at a traffic light where the rpm's were low. he takes it out for a spin and says he could get it to do it. they looked at the distro cap (replaced in late feb or early march) and said they thought there was maybe a little water and some oil in there. car runs fine for two weeks. then im going to work raining again or wet roads from night rain, comming off the highway around a clover leaf exit ramp and down twards the bottom of the ramp where the g force is the strongest, i loose all power but it cuts back in as fast as it went out and then it dies for good the next instant. i get it cranked while its still rolling and proceed on my way. i have to stop at a light about 3/4 miles down the road and it misses and stalls out. i try three times to crank it before it catches and when i shift to drive it dies. i crank it again and rev the engine and shift to drive at about 2000 rpm's and race to the next turn off. on the way there it had good pick up for a second then the next second it was way puiny and sort of accelerate and sputter, then it would pick up like normal, then puiny, then normal all for about the 1/4 mile to the turn off and while i turned it missed and almost died but i put it in neutral and reved it put it back into drive gave it some gas and it died. i just coasted to a parking lot and walked the rest of the way to the pool. i've search the sight and come up with this: check: the ignition wires; spark plug cables; ignition coil(?); tranny speed sensor(?); haul sensor(?)
and i also saw that something about a seal for the distro cap or maybe it was the distro but the after market seal was black and i need a green or a white one.
any other suggestions would be welcomed.
