tips on trunk struts replacement.?Thanks 700 1990

Struts doesnot lift in winter(-20 c) but fine in summer.one previous thread on a 240 seems to indicate that for a sedan you will need a bracket to compress the new struts.
what's the procedure?
Haynes book seem to indicate that you need to remove ONE clip only to install one end and HOOK the other end into a horizontal catch/bar
