760 GLE - Grinding Noise 700 1996

Having recently taken ownership of 760GLE and its great.
Bad news is this whining/grinding noise. It starts when the key is turned in the lock (then engine doesn't need to be turned on), stays at a continual noise level, then stops when the keys are turned to off. Close examination revealed the noise is coming (it seems) from in front of the battery almost behind the headlamp. Would appreciate it if anyone has experienced this before ? Could it be a motor for the headlamp washwipe?
