PINGING/PRE-IGNITION/DIESELING?? 200 1986

hELLO All,
MY '86 240 wagon seems to ping, pre-ignite,detonate a lot when under load, going up hills etc
it also seem to run on slightly sometimes, (keeps running for 1/2 second after switch off)
I have just started running it on 96 octane as the owner's book says, was running on 91 octane
is there a vacuum advance, or electronic do-dad i can check???
just bought it (and a '79 sedan for spares) so am on a steep learning curve
