Steel turbo intake hose has any one tried this? 700 1988

I have an 88 740 with the mitsubish turbo, my turbo intake hose needs to be replaced, common problem, which cost about $200 I live in Australia and was wondering if any one has tried replacing it with steel. Any info would be helpful thank you.
