Hard initial start 200

1984 wagen (non turbo) B23F engine.
History: My daughter bought this car 2 years ago. I drove it for 3 days to check it out. Main fuel pump died. I replaced it and the in tank pump's rubber line
as it was split. This summer I went ahead and replaced the int tank pump and sock
as it had a searching idle and the pump sounde like it was wavering.
That helped a little. I pulle the TB and cleaned it. reinstalled it and
adjusted the the microswitch. I have also pulled and cleaned the idle air bypass
valve... timed it and everything looked pretty good.. just a bit of the old hunt problem.
I installed a new fuel pressure regulator and it runs great.. however, now
it starts hard initially. start it and it dies .. start it again and give it a bit of gas and then it is happy.. did I mention it runs great? This thing doesnt
have a cold start injector that I can find.... The new main pump came with a
new check valve so I cant imagine it is bad and letting the fuel pressure bleed off.
I am going to put the old fuel pressure regulator back in and see what happens.
Sooooo.. any ideas? sound familure?
