power windows stopped working 200 1990

yesterday, just before i got out of the car the windows were working. 2 hours later they were no longer working and still don't work. none of the swithces work on any door. the fuse is in tact and new and i've checked the connections at the drivers side switches.
i used a volt meter on a few of the wires on the drivers window switch and the lock, but i don't really know how to read it. one on the window switch came out at 12 and the others came out at around 0 - 3. the lock showed 12.
in the past i've had trouble with the drivers switch for the drivers side rear window - it takes a few pushes to get it to work.
could this all be because of the relay (i'm not sure which one it is, the bentley manual is vague on this one)? or is it a wiring prob?

any ideas?
