Turns over but won't start

I just recently bought an 81 240 GL. I'm having problems starting it. It turns over but only starts when I spray some starter fluid near a part I know has a crack in it...the flame trap underneath the intake manifold. I am wondering if a small crack in the flame trap would cause the car to start hard or stall after starting. What I am hoping it is not...but it could be...is the cold start injector/valve. If anyone could help me that would be great. If it helps any...I also have an '82 240 GL for parts. Thanks, Rob
