Stainless steel screws - how to tell difference between stainless and regular steel

Sorry for the off-topic, but how can you tell if a piece of metal such as an anonymous screw is rust-resistant stainless steel or regular steel? I'm doing some bodywork and need to do some screwin'. I have a bunch of loose screws (so to speak) at my disposal and, being a cheapskate, would rather use them than buy new screws.

Thanks.
