Impending starter failure? 200 1986

My '86 240 has developed a disturbing starting symptom. When I start the engine, it'll crank the usual 4-5 times before catching. Now, however, I'm getting a momentary screech on the last crank. It's as if the starter's pinion gear is not freewheeling as it should. Is my starter on its last legs? BTW, it's the original starter on the car with 222K miles. Thanks,
