My '90 740 has run lots better since I did the flame trap and throttle body cleaning as per FAQ. Great advice. It still has some oddities, sometimes has a hesitation on the freeway, a momentary cutout then runs fine, and sometimes seems to not have as much power as other times and no particular indicators for that such as hot day, air on or off, gas brand or full or low tank, etc. I was at the boneyard and grabbed a fpr from a '90 that was still there. I opened it and looked closely at the solders and so on, it looked pretty good, no signs of burning but it appeared the solder wasn't perfect, but I thought I'd try it and see what happened. Oh, it was dated '95, so apparently had been replaced at some point, mine is the original dated '89. And mine was really a marvelously well made relay, nicer than the newer one, with woven copper pigtails and very nice little springs, perfect solder, etc. Had I looked at it before I got the other I wouldn't have bothered and looked elsewhere for problems.
Well. I was amazed. A real and almost dramatic improvement. Runs stronger, idles smoother, pulls uphill better, shift points hit just when you want them to. I just drove it 20 mi just for the pleasure of it running so well. No hint of a cutout.
Just passing this along.
