whstling noises during acceleration 700 1987

Problem: Upon moderate to wide-open acceleration, I hear noises which immediately bring to mind a small family of guinea pigs living under the hood somewhere. It's a series of high-pitch whistles that increase in pitch with engine speed. Recently, the problem has grown worse, with the noises becoming far more pronounced under heavier (more than one passenger) loads. This leads me to suspect the exhaust, but it is not an area I am familiar with.

Could this perhaps be related to a recent bout of oil burning? Any suspicions to a cause or tests to rule out components are welcome.

Cheers
