I need some advice on my 1993 Volvo 940 Turbo wagon. The A/C cools because I feel cold air barely coming out of the center dash vent, but only when the car is moving (I think due to forward movement of the vehicle). When I turn the fan speed switch, nothing happens. No fan motor sounds either. No air movement from the vents. I removed the glove box, right vent control, and the vent tubes that run left over to the distribution box. The vent selector switch causes the distribution box door to open and close, so I assume the vacuum system that operates this door is OK. I wedged a stick inside this distribution box to keep the door open, hoping that forward movement of the car would allow lots of air to come out. Nothing noticeable inside the car, but perhaps it is because the days are so hot.
Last summer, my problem with the air flow initially began. Like now, the A/C cooled fine. But then, I could hear the fan motor working, but no air flowed out of the vents. When I wedged a stick inside this same distribution box, lots of cold air came out of this opened door. But nothing out of the vents still. Then a friend discovered that a tiny vacuum hose under the hood had fallen off. When he put it back on, the A/C came out of the vents OK. Problem solved. Then in winter, I lost air movement again, but the vacuum hose was still connected and not collapsed. I could barely feel hot air coming out of the vents, but at least it was there.
I suffered through the cold days, and have suffered through these hot days this summer. That brings me to the problem I described above. Based on the past year’s events, I am confident that the A/C cools and the heater produces heat. I am having an air flow problem though.
The fan speed switch does not work on any setting. Is this problem a fan speed switch problem, fuse problem, or maybe even a bad fan motor?
If it is a fan speed switch, fuse, or fan problem, please give me the step-by-step procedures to get at the faulty part to replace or test it. And how do I test the part to see if it is faulty?
Also, my CHECK ENGINE lights stays on constantly. What is likely causing this?
After work when it is hot outside, the car starts OK, but dies immediately if I don’t keep the gas on. It also dies when I take my foot off the gas to press the brake in order to change gears to back up or move forward. In the mornings when it is cooler, the car starts fine, I don’t need to keep my foot on the gas to keep it running, and usually, but not always, I can brake, put it in reverse, and back up, all without it dieing. After the car begins moving, forward or backwards, it usually stays running.
At stop signs or lights, I can brake and accelerate normally without it dieing. But, ALWAYS, when I press on the accelerator (light or hard), I get a significant (in my opinion) time delay before the engine responds with acceleration. Since it is a turbo, once I get past this dead accelerator response zone, it moves like a turbo is supposed to move. It’s just that initial response. Before the CHECK ENGINE light came on, the motor responding well to accelerator pedal opeation.
Are these easy fixes?
Thanks
Richard
