Gas Tank Grounding ...SPARKS??... 1800 1968

Hello,
I have been trying to sort out my fuel gauge for a late summer trip I have planned in my '68 1800s . Recently installed a (supposedly) working gauge, but it pegs at max full as soon as I engage the elec. system. The gauge is grounded properly so far as I can tell, so here's the rub. I ran this by a friend, an experienced Volvo mechanic, and he told me to ground the gas tank. Just wind a wire a couple times around one of the screws holding the sending unit in place and ground it to the frame somewhere convienent. Now I have really enjoyed working on this car, it is my first hands on foray into auto mechanics, and I normally would just give it a shot and see if it works out.... however, I am a bit worried about creating a spark situation right on top of the tank. This is something I would rather be a bit overcautious with....
Thanks for considering my situation,
J.C. Burton
