940 GLE, fluttering idle and poor acceleration 900 1991

Hi all,

OK got one. Have a 940 GLE with 165,000 miles on the clock. What I'm getting is intermittent, as it does not happen consistantly:

1) Unsteady Idle- idle can range all the way from 650 down to 400 and oft times lower. Taking it in or out of gear makes no difference.

2) POwer loss on acceleration. It just seemns sluggish when acceleration. then, once the engine reaches about 3000 RPM it magically clears itself up and returns to it's normal self.

3) Often, the engine stops. the idle gets so low it dies out. Always restarts without a problem.

As I['ve mentioned all of the above symptoms are intermittent. Sometimes they don't happen at all, other days they make the car downright undriveable. Does not seem to be any rhyme or reason to it.

1) Temperature, either ambient or engine temperature, make no difference. It can do it when the engine is first started in the morning, or after it is hot and been running for several hours. It can also do it when it's 90 degrees outsode, or at night when it gets down to 50.

2) THe car operates beautifully on the freeway at freeway speed. It's just around town that driving it has become a problem.

3) It's had a Tune up within the last 4000 miles. Including all filters (except fuel filter), plugs, cap rotor, wires, fluids, flame trap, etc.

Any advice appreciated.

Fred
