possible tail light swap 88 740 with 90+ style tails????? 700 1988

ok, I know volvo did some minor updates to the 740 in 1990, but the body remained virtually unchanged, correct? so as far as two issues (mech fitting and wiring compatibility) does anyone know if the 1990 and up tails can be worked into 1989 and older (a 1998 to be specific) 740 GLE? and whats involved? I.E. I'd need to get wire pigtails from a 90+ junker to splice in or whatnot....
