1992 740T cooling conundrum 700 1992

I've noticed my fan staying on for a few minutes after I turn off the car on a regular basis. I started watching the temp gauge more carefully and noticed it move past the normal 12:00 position on occasion but not neccesarily in heavy traffic and never to the red zone. My mechanic said the radiator looks good and that it's not the original though I've had the car for five years without a radiator incident. It is NOT the plastic kind. He did say that my fan might be working intermitently and noticed a strange wiring job. Someone has bypassed my cooling fan relay from the in tank temp sensor which he says causes the computer to lack a normal temp reading, causing a change in timing. He hooked it back to the relay but everything functions the same.

The water pump and thermostat are less than 2 years old and check out fine with the mechanic.

Also, the fan is not belt driven. It is black and looks like the 850 fan blade. It is completely electric and seems to do a good job. I don't think the fan is a problem.

Sorry to babble. Any thoughts?

btw the mechanic wanted to put in a new fan for $470 just for the part.
