How to tell when your springs are bad? 700 1988

Im in the middle of a front suspension rebuild so i bought some replacement
shocks too. How can i tell if the springs need changing?

They arent rusty or cracked/chipped. The clerk i got the shocks from told me to measure the gap in the windings and to compare it to what ever measurement i got from the new springs in the store.

I did that and my springs are 65mm and the new ones were 57mm, what does this tell me and does this even tell me something?

It's a 744 with 156000km on it and i think it's all original parts from 1988 in the front.
