How do I test if the mass air flow meter is working properly 200

I just found that the thin wire inside the MAFM doesn't light up (saw it light up before) when the car is idling. Doesn't seem right to me, although the car starts, idles and runs fine, except having NOx readings above the limits during emission test. Could this be the cause? How do I test if it's working properly? Thanks for the input.
