Uneven acceleration in 3rd gear, tranny noise (M46). 200 1985

Hi folks:

Have what I believe is a transmission problem with my 4spd+OD '85 240. Under moderate acceleration in 3rd gear, there is an excessive amount of lateral movement in the stick, and the car does not accelerate smoothly (kind of choppy). The car also "growls" at me whenever the tranny is in 3rd gear and under load. No problems in any of the other forward gears, including overdrive, or in reverse. 254K miles on the odometer and the tranny has never been out of the car. Clutch is about three years old and does not appear to be slipping, but I'm certainly not an expert.

Ideas?
