Failed emissions....curious about something.... 200

Well, I took my 89 244 through NJ inspection today, and here are the results:

NOX

Standard: 1273 Reading: 3538 (FAIL)

HC

Standard: 167 Reading: 168 (!!) (FAIL)

CO%

Standard: 0.94 Reading: 0.70 (PASS)

What would cause my NOX readings to be that high? I didn't add any of that G2P stuff in my tank, nor did I any other kind of additives. I just took the car through as-is.

And just as a bit of insult to injury, it also failed for a burned-out brake light. Odd, as the light was functioning just fine as I sat on the hour and change line to get the car inspected.

So, folks...should I spend the money, and get the car fixed (I'm almost afraid to see how much this is going to cost me...and in NJ, you must have your car repaired by either a certified emissions tech, or you can fix it yourself--but either way, you must provide every last receipt, proving that you did fix the car), or should I just go to my friendly "mob garage", and purchase an inspection sticker for $100.00? I'm leaning more towards the latter option, since I don't feel like dunking a billion dollars into fixing my emissions system---as we all know, factories and trucks are the gross polluters--not our cars!

Let me know!!!

Thanks,

Steve
