I've got a nasty situation on my hands, and am looking for advice from more experienced quarters....my '72 164e had a fuel line leak a few weeks ago, and I replaced the small hose leading out of the fuel pump. Today, though, I smelled gas and noticed a puddle under the fuel pump area. Upon inspection, there is gas everywhere under there....the hose between the pump and filter appears saturated, and gas seems (?) to be oozing out of the pump itself. One of the rubber connecting points, where the pump bolts on to the side of the protective "shelf," has broken free. There is gas continuing to leak -- and I can't see where it's coming from.
Question 1: would it be safe to put the pieces back together and drive the car to my mechanic's place?
Question 2: is there a way to cut off the gas supply so the leakage doesn't continue? It has a full tank....
