Can I change an oil filter with out draining the block or making a mess? 200 1977

Well, today my father changed the oil on the '77 244, but instead of using the Mann filter I gave him (which he apparently misplaced) he put one of those dreaded orange Fram crap cans on the car.

My question is quick and simple: Can I simply unscrew the sorry Fram filter and put a new Mann filter in it's place with out having to drain the block? If it is going to spill oil everywhere, I'll drain it, but if it doesn't make a mess, it would save me quite a bit of time.

Thanks as always.
