Is there something different on the 1978 and earlier volvo 240's? My 78 244 will not turn back to center causing interesting driving in between trucks on the interstate.
I have all new bushings front and rear. I have a rebuilt power steering rack, tie rod ends and lower ball joints. Caster was at 2.77 and 2.8 degrees. The lower ball joints are for power steering cars,(I went to pick and pull and took measurements.) and they are biased to the front.
I notched out the mount holes at the top of the strut mount 5/16 of an inch. This increased caster to 3.22 degrees. Before I did this I could turn the steering sharp and let go, the car would stay in curve. I would guess it would be able to circle in a small parking lot all day long.
After notching It will come out of circle somewhat. I would say it would still circle but in a much larger parking lot, (Wallmart or sams).
The specs the shop used to alighn said range for 75 - 84 240's is 3-4 degrees. Why could I only get 2.8 without modification? Is the computer spec wrong? I only ask because I see parts list making distiction between 78 and 79. Did something change with the front suspension during this time? Perhaps the control arms?
Thanks in advance
Joe
